Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Google Finance is JavaScript and Flash, Adobe says so!

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

When Google introduced their new Finanace website a while back of course wanted to figure out what they where using.  I do my normal first test of using the right click button on the mouse to see if Flash comes up in the context menu.  Sure enough Flash is used on the charting part of the Google finance.

The more interesting part of this and why I bring it up is that Adobe actually acknowledges Google’s use of JavaScript and Flash in a technical document.

Also, because Flash Player is integrated with the browser runtime environment, developers can easily deliver applications that combine user interface logic written in JavaScript with components or entire applications written in Flex. For example, Google is taking advantage of both JavaScript
and Flash as part of its Google Finance site. As shown in Figure 12, the application uses common Ajax techniques to update news stories and highlight news items, while the interactive chart takes advantage of the Flash Player runtime to draw a rich data visualization and show the connections between breaking news and changing stock price.

They go on to talk about the Flex-Ajax bridge (FA Bridge) but nothing concrete that Google is actually using FA Bridge.  Either way its nice to see high profile uses of Flash and JavaScript/AJAX being referred to in an Adobe’s technical white paper.

Zoho adds offline functionality with Google Gears

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Zoho announced today that they’ve added hooks into Google Gears in their Zoho Writer program so that you can access and modify your documents when you’re offline. After hanging out with Dion Almaer on the bus I was really anxious to see someone else use Google Gears and I hadn’t checked out Zoho Writer in a long time. They’ve done a lot with it. The interface is much improved and it feels pretty snappy. I’ve been demoing Buzzword at the keynotes for the on AIR Bus tour and while I like Buzzword’s interface better, I think Zoho Writer feels very HTML/webby, so I think that appeals to a lot of people.

Google Gears installed just fine (but I hope they can do Camino support down the road) and even though I always hate restarting the browser because I “tab up” it’ to be expected for something like this. Once installed Zoho Writer worked exactly as expected. It downloads all the documents to the hard drive (I’m not sure if you can toggle which ones to grab or not) and you have access to all of your documents wherever you are. You can’t make changes and sync them up yet, but that’s coming according to TechCrunch.

I’d love to see Zoho as an AIR application and I think office apps are a natural fit for the browser/desktop blend because I think the experience is better for office apps as desktop applications. But a lot of people really love Zoho and working with office applications inside the browser. For those types of applications, Google Gears is a good fit. I think overall this is a good step for rich internet applications as we move into the world of the desktop experience.

Use Flash, But Don’t Offend Google

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

As much as site publishers want to present the best possible presence to their visitors, they equally want to stay in the good graces of search engine spiders, and Google’s in particular. It presents a challenge to webmasters: how to use Flash while showing the Googlebot what it needs to see?
